Air treatment (after-treatment)

From contaminants to ISO 8573 classes—aftercoolers, refrigerated and desiccant dryers, precision line filters, and condensate handling. Match dew point and filtration to process risk without OEM brand pages.

Abstract dryer and filter air-treatment silhouette

Typical ranges

  • Refrigerated dryers: pressure dew point typically ~2–10 °C (fixed speed or PM VSD; air- or water-cooled)
  • Desiccant / adsorption: heatless, heated / micro-heat, blower-heated; targets such as −20 °C or −40 °C PDP; zero-loss / micro-loss regeneration options
  • Precision filters: particulate, oil-removal / coalescing, activated carbon / odor—sized to ISO 8573-1
  • Aftercoolers: air-cooled and water-cooled upstream of drying

Typical configurations

  • Plant train: compressor → aftercooler → separator → dryer → filters → receiver
  • Refrigerated dryer only for general plant air at moderate dew point
  • Heatless or heated regenerative desiccant for low dew point
  • Blower-heated or zero-loss / micro-loss desiccant for energy-conscious regeneration
  • Combined (fridge + adsorption) trains for stable dew point under varying load
  • Laser-integrated or application skids where floor space and utilities are constrained

From contaminants to ISO 8573

Compressed air carries water, oil aerosol, and particles from ambient intake and the compression process. ISO 8573-1 gives a shared language for solid particles, humidity/liquid water, and oil—so dryer type, dew-point target, and filter stages can be specified before brand selection.

Refrigerated dryers cool the air to condense moisture (typical PDP ~2–10 °C).Desiccant dryers adsorb moisture for much lower dew points (heatless, heated/micro-heat, blower-heated; zero-loss or micro-loss options). Precision filters address particles, oil, and odor downstream. EntryAir helps map class and dew point to a treatment train—then inquire.

Frequently asked questions

Refrigerated vs desiccant dryer—how do I choose?

Refrigerated dryers typically deliver pressure dew points around 2–10 °C for general plant air. Desiccant (adsorption) dryers target much lower dew points (e.g. −20 °C or −40 °C) for moisture-critical processes. Combined fridge + adsorption trains stabilize dew point under varying load.

What is ISO 8573-1 used for?

ISO 8573-1 classifies compressed air by particles, water, and oil. Filters, dryers, and separators are sized so the delivered class matches process and instrument requirements.

Do I need an aftercooler before the dryer?

Air- or water-cooled aftercoolers reduce compressed-air temperature and condense bulk water before drying—improving dryer sizing and reliability in a complete treatment train.

What about condensate and oil-water separation?

Oil-water separators and condensate management keep drains compliant and protect drains/piping. Plan separators with the dryer and filter stack, not as an afterthought.

Are PM VSD refrigerated dryers available?

Yes—fixed-speed and PM VSD refrigerated dryers (air- or water-cooled), plus application-integrated packages (e.g. laser-oriented trains), are common inquiry options.
